IMPACT EPILEPSY – Interactive Meetings Promoting Access to Care and Treatment
Paris, France – 21 and 22 October 2014 | 12 and 13 April 2016

Delegates from Developing Countries Sharing their OUTREACH ACTIVITIES for EPILEPSY
LIFELINE TRAIN
Appreciation
- One-to-one, face-to-face consultation with the patient and caregivers by a senior epileptologist goes a long way in refining the diagnosis, planning the therapy and counselling
- It is good that efforts are made to provide medicines for a short period.
- I found it particularly noteworthy that a team of counsellors from Mumbai/Delhi talks to the PWE and caregivers in a leisurely and friendly manner to explain the therapy, answer many questions and dispel the myths.
- It is heartening to note that many poor patients from the remotest parts of the country are able to get highly specialised treatments and interventions at premier tertiary referral centres.
Suggestions for Betterment
- Patient database- Demographic and clinical data of all patients should be stored.
- Local liaison- More efforts are needed to ensure participation from specialists and basic doctors. A joint CME must be organized for local chapters of IMA, API, IAP, GPs during late evening.
- More emphasis on public health education & patient education.
- The basket of drugs to be offered can be enhanced.
- Some investigations may be arranged.

- The Lifeline Express, or Jeevan Rekha, is the world’s first hospital on rails, launched in 1991 by the Impact India Foundation Indian Railways.
- This 7-coach, air-conditioned train provides free, Specialized medical care including surgery for cataracts, cancer, hearing, and Cleft lip to over 1,000,000 underprivileged people in remote, rural areas.

Outreach Services require Capacity Building
- Training the Trainers
- 2.Training for a diverse spectrum of targets
a. Caregivers
b. Communication Partners Training for people with Aphasia
c. Primary health care Workes
d. Para-medical Staff
e, General Practionars, family physicians
f. Self training for patients. - Hub and Spoke Model
- Looking out and Co-opting Team members (Rotarians in my case) and Event managers
- Health education material in print and Digital formats
New Technology is a boon for Outreach services
Tele-medicine and Tele-Therapy
I am using it maximally for remote assessment and therapy of People with Aphasia.
I have created software application for this purpose: शब्दचित्र और त्रिवेणी Electronic health Records make it possible to broadcast educational messages to patients suffering from a given disease and to convene their meetings from time to time.
Concluding Remarks
- Most of us do Outreach Services sometimes or others
- All of us must be doing more and more of outreach services
- The Society owes this from us,
- There are ways and examples of doing it better and more intensively.
- It is not a zero-sum equation between our clinical and academic works on one hand and the outreach services on the other.
- The Two are Complementary to each other.
- There is much more to Outreach than merely providing clinical services:
a. Advocacy.
b. Awareness.
c. Education.
d. Humanities.
e. Capacity Building.
